How to promote your business in Lagos without wasting money
A practical framework for spending marketing budget only where it moves leads, enquiries, and revenue — not vanity metrics.
Every Lagos business owner we speak to has a story about spending money on marketing that went nowhere. Boosted posts with no enquiries. A flyer campaign nobody remembers. An influencer that brought likes but no sales.
The problem is almost never the amount of money — it's the order in which it's spent. Here's the framework we use.
Step 1 — fix the free stuff first
Before spending on ads, make sure the free assets you already own are working:
- Google Business Profile — verified, categorised, photos, weekly posts
- Instagram bio — clear offer + WhatsApp link + location
- WhatsApp Business — welcome message, quick replies, catalog
- Website or landing page — loads on mobile, one clear call-to-action
If any of these is broken, paid ads will just send traffic to a leaky bucket. This step alone often lifts sales 20–40% before you spend a naira.
Step 2 — pick one paid channel and one offer
Don't spread ₦200,000 across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Google. Pick one channel where your customer is, and one clear offer. Run it for 4 weeks. Measure enquiries and closed sales — not likes.
Step 3 — measure enquiries per naira
Ask every new customer "How did you hear about us?" and write it down. After 4 weeks you'll know your Cost Per Enquiry and Cost Per Customer on that channel. Anything below your average order value is worth scaling.
Step 4 — double the channel that works, kill the rest
Only after you have proof from Step 3 should you increase the budget. Don't add a new channel until the first one has hit its ceiling.
Step 5 — sell to your existing customers more
The cheapest sale is the next one to a customer you've already served. Broadcast on WhatsApp, send a thank-you follow-up, ask for a review, offer a return-customer discount. This is where most Lagos SMEs leave the biggest money on the table.
